Top 10 Retail Companies To Own For 2014

Small cap marijuana stocks Medical Marijuana Inc (OTCMKTS: MJNA), Cannabis Science Inc (OTCMKTS: CBIS), Medbox Inc (OTCMKTS: MDBX), Growlife Inc (OTCBB: PHOT) and HEMP, Inc (OTCMKTS: HEMP) were all surging by double digits yesterday thanks in part to legal sales of pot beginning in Colorado.

However, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) went so far as to issue a warning last summer about marijuana stock scams whileany investor or trader who has followed small cap marijuana stocks will remember that pretty much all have probably, at one time or another, been the subject of some sort of paid for promotions or investor relation campaigns that the cynics among us would call ump and dumpschemes, but would otherwise have been properly disclosed (for the most part) in disclosures as required by the SEC. Again, there is nothing sinister or illegal about such activities when there are proper disclosures, but its something that newbie retail investors and traders not used to investing or tradingsmall cap OTC stocks will need to remember. On the other hand, some of the characters associated with small cap marijuana stocks are downright shady - something else investors need to consider.

For one thing, I can tell a great oil company from a not so great oil company. I can evaluate the company culture, management, etc. There was no way I was ever going to answer questions like that. But I can easily split Murphy U.S. retail business from its other operations. And I can compare that part of the company to other public companies like Pantry (PTRY) and Susser (SUSS). I can also this is much harder look at Murphy reserves and compare them to other oil companiesreserves. The SEC now requires a standardized way of reporting discounted net cash flows for all oil companies. So, there certainly a specific number available for every company. Whether it a very good number or not depends on the assumptions the method uses.
